Boyd stays unbeaten, Lady Bulldogs win big

Lady Broncos survive toughest test, Eastside keeps surging

The Boyd Lady Broncos have made winning look easy for most of the season. Tuesday night at Irving College, they had to earn every point.

Playing without Oly Cathcart and facing a physical Lady Tiger defense determined to make every trip into the paint a battle, Boyd leaned on Sky Wright and its own relentless defensive pressure to grind out a 14-6 victory and remain unbeaten.

Wright scored 13 of Boyd's 14 points, carrying the offense on a night when scoring opportunities were difficult to find. Britta Burger added the other point as the Lady Broncos improved to 9-0.

Irving College came prepared to challenge the league leaders. The Lady Tigers packed the paint, dared Boyd to shoot from the perimeter and pounced whenever the Lady Broncos tried to attack inside. The strategy made life difficult for a Boyd team accustomed to getting production from its talented trio of Wright, Cathcart and Juliette Ferguson.

Boyd led just 4-0 after the first quarter and 7-2 at halftime. Irving College continued to make things difficult in the second half, but the Lady Broncos never allowed the Lady Tigers to generate enough offense to threaten their lead.

That was largely because Boyd's defense remained as disruptive as ever. The Lady Broncos created chaos in the open court, turning defensive pressure into opportunities while keeping Irving College from finding any consistent offensive rhythm.

Willow Hertwig led the Lady Tigers with four points, while Hadlee Green and Mosley Pepper scored one apiece.

It wasn't the offensive showcase Boyd has delivered so often this season, but it may have been one of its most important victories. Without Cathcart and facing an opponent that refused to back down, the Lady Broncos proved they could win a different kind of game.

Eastside, meanwhile, continued its impressive second-half surge with a 17-4 victory over Bobby Ray in a matchup of two teams that have made significant strides as the season has progressed.

Both programs entered Tuesday playing some of their best basketball of the year, but the Lady Bulldogs made sure the night belonged to them.

Lightning-quick guard Mia Rodriguez scored 12 points to lead Eastside, using her speed to create offensive opportunities while the Lady Bulldog defense completely shut down Bobby Ray for the first three quarters.

The Lady Stars went 30 minutes without scoring, trailing 4-0 after the first quarter, 12-0 at halftime and 16-0 entering the fourth. Emmie Taylor finally broke through with a pair of late baskets, accounting for all four Bobby Ray points.

By then, Eastside had long since taken control. Rodriguez supplied the offensive spark, while Elizabeth Grigg and Ada Crouch added two points apiece. Haven Hicks finished with one.

Elementary basketball games continue Thursday, Nov. 5, with Dibrell at West, Hickory Creek at Centertown and Irving College at Morrison. All three matchups are scheduled for 6 p.m.
